Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) is an internationally recognized architectural studio founded in 1986 in Aarhus, Denmark by Morten Schmidt, Bjarne Hammer, and John F. Lassen. The practice has evolved into one of Scandinavia’s most influential and award-winning design studios, operating globally with projects spanning Europe, Asia, and North America. Rooted in Nordic architectural traditions, SHL’s design philosophy is centered on light, simplicity, social responsibility, and democratic accessibility. Their work consistently explores how architecture can create inclusive public spaces that strengthen communities while responding to environmental challenges. The studio’s portfolio includes cultural landmarks, libraries, educational buildings, offices, and large-scale urban developments, often integrated into complex mixed-use contexts. SHL is particularly known for its expertise in designing public and cultural buildings, especially libraries and civic institutions that function as social hubs. Notable projects include the Royal Danish Library (Black Diamond), ARoS Art Museum, DOKK1 in Aarhus, and Shanghai Library East. These projects reflect the studio’s commitment to combining strong architectural identity with openness and usability for the public. In 2018, SHL became part of the global architecture and design firm Perkins & Will, expanding its international reach while reinforcing its leadership in sustainable and human-centered design. Today, the studio continues to push forward innovative architectural solutions that balance aesthetics, performance, and long-term environmental impact.
