Residential renovation projects in coastal locations often require a delicate balance between architectural transformation and respect for the surrounding landscape. Prima Avenue Camps Bay is an ongoing residential renovation that reimagines an existing home in one of Cape Town’s most dramatic coastal neighborhoods. Designed by Abon Studio, the project focuses on resolving spatial disconnections within the house while strengthening the relationship between the interior spaces and the surrounding ocean views. The original structure presented a fundamental challenge: the primary living areas were visually and physically separated from the exterior pool and patio zones. These outdoor elements were positioned nearly two meters below the interior level, disrupting circulation and weakening the spatial continuity between inside and outside living environments. The renovation strategy therefore focuses on reorganizing levels, redistributing functions, and introducing new circulation paths that create a more unified architectural experience. One of the most significant design interventions is the relocation of the swimming pool. By moving the pool toward the front of the property, the architects maximize solar exposure and strengthen the panoramic connection to the Atlantic Ocean. This move also allows the former pool shell to be repurposed into a set of new interior amenities, including a cinema room, a changing area, and a sauna. The existing entrance foyer is carefully modified to provide direct access to the cinema space, integrating the new program seamlessly into the architectural layout. Additional spatial adjustments reinforce the connection between levels. A newly excavated passage runs alongside the former pool shell, guiding circulation toward a bespoke barbeque deck positioned at the previous patio level. This deck functions as a transitional platform between the main entertainment areas, the new pool terrace, and the wellness spaces. Through carefully calibrated level changes, each zone maintains uninterrupted ocean views while allowing fluid movement between indoor and outdoor environments. Despite the presence of neighboring houses, the property benefits from a dense perimeter of mature trees that naturally provide privacy. These trees frame the western vistas without obstructing views of the ocean, enabling the design to maintain openness while preserving intimacy. The result is a residential retreat where architecture, landscape, and lifestyle merge into a cohesive spatial narrative. The project demonstrates how thoughtful renovation strategies can transform an existing structure into a more connected and experiential living environment.
