Everden Residence is a contemporary single-family home located in Toronto, Canada, designed by StudioAC as a reinterpretation of the traditional idea of a house through modern spatial strategies and architectural expression. The project explores how familiar residential archetypes—particularly the gabled roof form—can be transformed into a spatial narrative that unfolds throughout the entire building.
The house is organized as a sequence of stacked volumes that create the perception of layered boxes rising vertically through three levels. Rather than treating the gable merely as a symbolic roof element, the architects extended this geometry into the interior spaces, allowing pitched ceilings to shape the experience of rooms on multiple levels. This approach produces a dynamic spatial atmosphere in which circulation, living areas, and private spaces are connected through changing ceiling heights and shifting volumes.
Large glazed openings connect the interior with the surrounding garden and allow daylight to penetrate deep into the living areas. The ground floor functions as the primary communal zone of the house, hosting the kitchen, dining space, and living areas in a fluid open plan. These spaces are visually linked to the exterior through full-height glass walls, reinforcing a strong relationship between indoor living and outdoor landscape.
Material selection plays a critical role in balancing expression and budget. The exterior envelope is clad in corrugated metal panels, chosen for their durability and affordability while still offering a refined architectural appearance when combined with carefully detailed edges and parapets. This material strategy enhances the perception of the stacked volumes while maintaining a pragmatic construction approach.
Inside the residence, warm timber surfaces and minimal interior finishes create a calm and cohesive atmosphere. The restrained palette emphasizes spatial form rather than decorative elements, allowing the peaked ceiling geometry and layered volumes to define the architectural identity of the house.
The Everden Residence ultimately balances conceptual architectural exploration with everyday livability. By reinterpreting familiar residential forms through contemporary geometry, the project creates a home that feels both recognizable and distinctly modern.
